LED Lighting: Denver Could Save Big Millions By Implementing LEDs

Cities all over the world are using LED lighting to save millions of dollars every year on energy costs, while also providing a safer environment for their residents.

Roanoke, VA made the switch and lowered the city’s power bill by about 35%.

In a recent 2 and 1/2 year study conducted worldwide in cities including New York, London and ten other cities, LED technology resulted in an 85 percent reduction in energy costs.

In downtown Denver this Christmas nearly 600,000 lights light up downtown all the way from Denver Union Station to the City and County Building. There are over 550,000 energy efficient LED lights adorn the 16th Street Mall.

If we utilized LED lights in Denver for street lights, office buildings and other outdoor uses we could save taxpayers significant dollars on the energy bills.

What Are LEDs?

LEDs, or Light emitting diodes, commonly called LEDs, are making a huge impact in the world. They can do hundreds of different jobs and are found in all kinds of devices such as digital clocks, transmit, remote controls, cell phones, and jumbo televisions. They can also light warehouses, offices and city streets-often with well over 70% savings in labor and energy costs.
LEDs are just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. However, unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they don’t have a filament that will burn out, and they don’t get nearly as hot. This means they have much lower maintenance costs. LEDs are illuminated merely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material, therefore they last just as long as a typical transistor. The lifespan of an LED beats the brief life of an incandescent bulb by literally thousands of hours.

Pulse-Start Metal Halide HID Lighting Fixtures

Pulse-start metal halide lamps, fixtures, and ballasts are well worth the initially higher front end costs they present to both you and to your clients. The improved efficiency and performance generates a superior light source and reduces energy costs that translate down the line to a return on investment. Pulse-start metal halides also last a great deal longer than their probe-start standard equivalents. This represents even more savings you can pass on to your client, because replacing standard MH fixtures represents both equipment costs and labor costs your clients simply do not want to pay in times of a recession.

Pulse-start metal halides, like their standard predecessors, fall into the category of High Intensity Discharge lamps, also known as HID lamps. On the average, a standard HID lamp performs with approximately 3 times the efficiency of an incandescent lamp. Even better results can be expected with pulse-start metal halide fixtures, which in spite of their approximately 20% higher front-end cost, more than pay for themselves over the course of a life span.

Increased lumen efficacy (lumens per watt) by as much as 24%.

While standard Metal Halides lead many sectors of the site lighting industry in the arena of LPW, it may very well serve both you and your clients to increase this efficiency by up to 24% by investing in pulse-start metal halides.

This may constitute the winning element of your bid if you are proposing an area lighting system in a major city such as Denver, Colorado where LPW efficiency regulations have recently change to 1 lumen per .05 watts. The power savings, plus the increase lighting output, could potentially represent an irresistible line item on your next proposal.

Higher light output per unit of electric power Pulse-start lamps produce more mean lumens per watt of electricity. Improved lumen maintenance by as much as 15%

Pulse-start metal halides offer further competitive advantage over standard MH lamps by increasing lumens maintenance by as much as 15%. As standard HIDs age, they actually output less light. To compensate for this phenomenon, known as lumen depreciation, contractors will often slightly oversell the number of lamps so the overall system will maintain the desired lighting output for the duration of its lifespan. This, of course, costs the client more money.

If you really want to be competitive, show your clients how pulse-start metal halides are 6-15% better at reducing lumens depreciation-then show them a photometric study with fewer fixtures (and less costs) than your competitors’ proposals contain.

Extended lamp life

Many of the latest, US-manufactured pulse-start metal halide lamps can last as long as 15,000 hours. This is 5,000 hours longer than the estimated 10,000-hour life span of a probe-start lamp of the same wattage.

Sell your clients not only on the idea of a longer lasting light source, but on the money they will avoid spending on expensive labor fees to replace burned out lamps.

Superior Color Rendering, Warm Up Time, and Re-Strike Time

As MH lamps get older, their CRI depreciates as well. Pulse-start MH lamps, however, maintain a consistently higher CRI than probe-start equivalents. They also take only 2 minutes to warm up, and in the event of a power failure, normally re-strike in 4 or 5 minutes—much better for security lighting than standard MH lamps that take around 12 minutes to re-strike.

Pulse-start Metal Halides Work Best with Pulse-start Fixtures and Electronic Ballasts

Every contractor knows it is generally not a good idea to mix newer technology with older technology. Pulse-start lamps should be fitted to pulse-start fixtures and operated with electronic ballasts for maximum energy savings. Since your clients will be spending more money on the equipment itself, it will be necessary to show them some math to justify the added expense, and to promise them a return on investment.

There are many different types of commercial lighting on the market today and a quick look around online will surely find you what you are looking for. Shown below is small list of the different types of lighting that are commercially available.

High Bay Lighting Fixtures

This type of commercial lighting is normally used in areas with high ceilings, normally above 15 feet, and can commonly be found in places such as gyms, shops, warehouses, factories and garages. This type of commercial lighting fixture uses a technology commonly known as High Intensity Discharge (HID). These type of lamps can attain the maximum amount of lighting to cover large areas.

Low Bay Lighting Fixtures

This type of lighting is more commonly used in warehouses and churches or areas where the ceiling heights are between 15 to 20 feet. This lighting gives the maximum amount of light without putting out too much glare.

Flood Lighting

This lighting is commonly used outdoors and also uses HID technology. These lights must be very bright to cover large areas such as football fields or loading areas. These lights are normally quite cheap and can be mounted on buildings, on the ground, or on poles.

Street Lights

These lights are installed on tall poles to provide a broad spread of light for the night time. They can be seen on walkways, streets and in parking lots. The poles that these lights are installed on are normally between 6 to 13 feet high and have to be able to withstand damp and wet weather conditions. Street lights are normally programmed to shut off during daylight hours.

Lighted Advertising Signs

Lights that are used to illuminated advertising signs are a great way to get your business to stand out from the crowd. These commercial lights are designed to attract the attention of passers and achieve this by using brightly colored neon lights. Some signs blink and change color to increase their attractiveness to potential customers.

Linear Fluorescent Lighting

This form of commercial lighting uses low wattage T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent tubes are very energy efficient and lead to great cost reduction when used.

Fluorescent High Bay Fixtures

The function of high bay fluorescent lighting is to light surface which are more than 15 feet away. Some common kinds of high bay applications can be seen in gymnasiums, warehouses and factories etc. All lamps which are used in applications are consists of mercury (High-Bay Lighting: Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, 2003, p 1, para 1). In recent times, both high intensity fluorescent technologies (HIF) and HID have gained popularity but the performance of HIF technology is understood better in many applications that is which has given HIF opportunity to gain market share. The improved technology of fluorescent lamps and the invention of new HIF fixtures have composed the most cost effective choice as fluorescent lighting for indoor areas like warehouses, big retail stores, factories and athletic facilities (Lighting: HID Versus Fluorescent for High-Bay Lighting, 2007, p 1 para 1).

History of fluorescent lighting

Generally people associate lighting and lamps with incandescent light bulb which was invented by Thomas Alwa Edison and some other inventors. These kinds of bulbs perform on the basis of electricity and filament. When these bulbs are heated by electricity, the filament gets high temperature so it glows and gives light. Fluorescent bulbs like arc and vapor perform differently. The light does not come due to heat; it is produced through the chemical reactions, which happen when the application of electricity is on different gases encircled in a glass void compartment (The History of Fluorescent Lights, 2009, para 1).

In 1857 Alaxandre E. Becquerel discovered the fact of fluorescence and phosphorescence. He imagined the creation of fluorescent tubes as same as they are made presently. He did some experiments on coating electric discharge tubes, which were combined with luminescent materials. This was the procedure which further expanded in fluorescent lamps (The History of Fluorescent Lights, 2009, para 2).

In 1901 Peter Cooper Hewitt got exclusive rights on the first mercury vapor lamp (The History of Fluorescent Lights, 2009 para 3). His low pressure mercury arc lamps became the very first of its kind for today’s modern fluorescent type. Edmund Germer discovered a high pressure vapor lamp which helped in producing economical light with less heat. In 1927 he copyrighted an experimental fluorescent lamp. Some historians give Edmund Germer the credit of inventing the first true fluorescent lamp (The History of Fluorescent Lights, 2009, para 7).

T5 Lamps

High lumen fluorescent systems are gaining a lot of popularity where T5 fixtures are presented in 4 and 6 lamps configurations whose effective process can be related to high bay applications. They are flexible systems which are some levels higher than any other high bay applications. It has following characteristics (High Bay lighting Solutions, 2007, p 3, para 1):

* It provides the most light with the help of the fewest lamps.

* It is good for using with occupancy sensors.

* It is ideal for maintaining lamp life in frequently switched applications.

* It has 120-277 volt and 347-480 volt ballasts.

* It can increase lumen output at 35 c ambient temperatures.

* It is specially designed for high bay applications.

* Its technology is very high which can reduce generated heat.

* It consists of thermal technology that can remove heat.

* It has the facility of additional energy savings (High Bay lighting Solutions, 2007, p 3, para 2).

Comparison with HID

HID lamps are thought to be point sources as they throw intense light in a small area. These kinds of lamps can be used for distant purposes such as indoor and outdoor sports facilities, warehouses, factories, where the ceilings are high and street lightings are used (Lighting: HID Versus Fluorescent for High-Bay Lighting, 2007, p 1, para 1).

If we compare HID with HIF lamps some disadvantages of HID lamps have been observed (High Bay lighting Solutions, 2007, p 2, para 2):

* They consume high energy.

* They have warm up and restrike delays as they cannot be related with occupancy censors effectively.

* Their noise is not favorable for quiet ambient

* Their lumen maintenance is very low where significant reduction in lower output can be observed.

* The color is very poor. CRI rates between 60 and 70. Color also varies from one lamp to other lamp.

* Its matching efficiency is less than 80%.

Now if we see benefits of high lumen fluorescent systems it can tell the difference between them and HID (High Bay lighting Solutions, 2007, p 2, para 3):

* HIF are energy efficient. They can save up to 50% energy.

They are instant and they have no warm up time. They have good relation with occupancy sensors so they can save maximum energy.

* Its operation is not noisy instead it is quiet. Its sound has been rated A.

* Its color is excellent. CRI rates between 75 and 85. It does not have any color variation or shift over time.

* Its matching efficiencies are higher than 90% (High Bay lighting Solutions, 2007, p 2, para 3).

While calculating energy efficiency it is necessary to check the number of lamps as well as watts per lamp (High-Bay Lighting: Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, p 3, para 4). For example four HO T5 lamps or induction fluorescent lamps are needed to create the same amount of light like HID lamp. If the lumens per watt are higher, we will need less electricity for light. If a lighting system uses less Kilowatt hr per year, a facility will use less electricity and it will pay for that (High-Bay Lighting: Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, 2003, p 3, para 4).

Switching from HID lamps to HO T5 fluorescent lamps

It has become a common trend to switch over from HIS lamps to HO T5 lamps that can increase energy efficiency in high bay lighting situation like warehouses etc. HO T5 and induction fluorescents (High-Bay Lighting: Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, 2003, p 2, para 7):

* are capable of insant-on and instant re-strike.

* They can be applied on energy saving occupancy sensors.

* They can be regulated through dimming

* They have lower rate mercury content than HID lamps (High-Bay Lighting:Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, 2003, p 2, para 7).

Recommendations

Facility owners, architects and managers who use high bay lighting applications should opt for the most energetic efficient system where the lowest mercury content is suitable for making and reshaping projects. For improving colors projects should be evaluated carefully. A buyer should consult a lighting professional before buying lighting system. This ensures the whole project can be assessed to check energy efficiency, lighting level and suitable color depiction. You should tell your lighting professional that your company will like low mercury alternatives (High-Bay Lighting:Opportunities for Mercury Reduction and Energy Efficiency, 2003, p 3, para 9).
