It’s time to move forward with your lighting and make the change from those old incandescent bulbs to more efficient LED (light emitting diode) bulbs. Before you make that move though, how much do you actually know about LED lighting?

LEDs are solid state lighting that uses a semiconductor to convert electricity into light, up to 80 per cent more efficiently than traditional incandescent bulbs. With many of today’s LED lights providing up to 25,000 hours of light – three years of being switched on 24 hours a day – your business is guaranteed to shine a lot longer than ever before once the switch is made.

LEDs come in a variety of colours, not just the traditional soft white or bright white. Use them in signage outside your business without fear of a bulb popping, or the colour fading for years to come. Or use them inside to create eye catching displays, unlike incandescent bulbs which illuminate the entire display, they can be moved to highlight specific parts of a display.

Due to their compact size, lower requirement of maintenance and resistance to breakage LEDs are now used in traffic lights, vehicles brake lights even commercial display cases. If you are wanting to improve your companies environmental impact, then LEDs are the way to go. In 2012, when 49 million LEDs were installed in the U.S the carbon emissions were estimated to drop by 1800 million metric tons – Think of the savings to your business.

LED bulbs run considerably cooler than incandescent bulbs but still produce a small amount of heat. The heat is pulled away by a heat sink in the base of the bulb, and is then dissipated into the air. If you plan to install LED bulbs in an enclosed space, ensure you use LED bulbs built for that purpose to avoid them dying a quick death. The same can be said for areas where you require dimmable lighting, to create an atmosphere. Due to their circuitry, general LED bulbs are not compatible with dimmer switches, and you will need to pay more for ones that will or replace the dimmer control with a leading-edge dimmer.
